Game Developer Bungie Releases Statement On Leaked ‘Roe V Wade’ Opinion Draft

Destiny 2 developer Bungie is no stranger to making political statements on various progressive issues in America and around the world. The Bellevue-based studio has had a lot to say about LGBTQ issues, Black Lives Matter and the war in Ukraine. But now they’re the first studio to wade into the current political flashpoint, the leaked draft notice that suggests Roe V Wade might be on the verge of being canceled.

Although the draft opinion is not final and things could change before the final decision, pro-choice advocates fear that if Roe ends up being overturned, it would significantly reshape abortion access in the landscape. American. Bungie has decided that they need to offer support to their employees upset by the current situation with a public statement. It reads:

“At Bungie, we believe that everyone has the right to choose their own path and that freedom is expressed in all facets of life. The leaked draft decision by the United States Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade represents a blow to freedom in America and a direct attack on human rights.

By creating a divide between those who hold the fundamental right to make the health decisions that suit them and those who do not have this same freedom, this decision, if it becomes final, will have profound consequences that will be felt for generations to come. across socio-economic lines.

Bungie is committed to protecting the freedom and privacy of its employees and to providing support to all employees impacted by this decision.

Standing up for reproductive choice and freedom is not a difficult decision to make, and Bungie remains committed to upholding these values.

The response, as you can imagine, was split. Pro-choice supporters applauded Bungie’s decision to issue a statement on the issue, which appears to be on a different playing field than typical corporate “we support gay rights and do not support racism” statements. which we have seen a lot of in recent years especially.

Bungie employees in particular seem particularly grateful that the company has taken a public stand:

Although on the other side, naturally, you’ll find all sorts of backlash in comments from pro-life gamers who question both the stance itself (being pro-choice) and the game developer doing a statement (“stick to ‘games, not politics!'”). Bungie’s social media team responded with a lot of blocking from some of the worst offenders, and some more explanatory responses that don’t apologize for the stance:

As of this writing, I haven’t seen any other game developers (companies, not individuals) make such a declarative statement about Roe’s draft advisory, but we’ll see if any of them chooses to follow Bungie’s lead here in the future. More soon.
