The five most expensive acquisitions of video game developers of all time https://seraphicblue.net/the-five-most-expensive-acquisitions-of-video-game-developers-of-all-time/ Tue, 11 Jan 2022 01:28:00 +0000 https://seraphicblue.net/the-five-most-expensive-acquisitions-of-video-game-developers-of-all-time/

The video game industry has experienced a buying frenzy in recent years, and the price of each acquisition only seems to increase. With Take-Two’s decision to buy Zynga for an industry record amount, we thought we would look back on the five most expensive acquisitions in gaming history.

Going through the list of acquisitions, a trend emerges. See if you can spot it.

5. Bytedance acquires Moonton: $ 4 billion

Chinese publisher Bytedance is perhaps best known for being the parent company of viral video app TikTok. It acquired mobile developer Moonton in March 2021 for $ 4 billion. Moonton’s most popular game, an iOS and Android MOBA called Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has gained attention in recent years as League of Legends developer Riot Games sued him for copyright infringement. The game remains popular across Southeast Asia to this day. On a list of the most expensive video game developer acquisitions of all time, $ 4 billion seems like a steal compared to what other companies have paid.

4. Activision Blizzard acquires King: $ 5.9 billion

Activision Blizzard’s decision to acquire Maltese mobile developer King in February 2017 for $ 5.9 billion, for some time, topped the list of the most expensive game developer acquisitions of all time. King is best known for his world-beating puzzle game candy Crush Saga. His first major game with Activision-Blizzard IP, Crash Bandicoot: on the run! released on Android and iOS in 2021. King’s gaming hallmark is addictive puzzle solving with lots of on-screen juice, combined with aggressive monetization. candy CrushS’s popularity continues to this day, even though even its most dedicated players are starting to feel pretty shabby.

3. Microsoft acquires ZeniMax Media: $ 8.1 billion

One of the more recent purchases on this list, Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media, which included Bethesda and all of its associated studios, for $ 8.1 billion in 2021. Bethesda is home to many valuable brands, characters, and IPs that are said to have been attractive to Microsoft. To bring Fall, Old scrolls, Loss, Wolfenstein, Dishonored, and the next one Starfield under the Xbox umbrella is a massive victory for Microsoft, which has struggled to find platform exclusives and is now looking to fulfill its popular Game Pass service. Game Pass is a hungry beast, and we expect Microsoft to reappear in our lists of most expensive video game developer acquisitions in the future.

2. Tencent acquires Supercell: $ 8.6 billion

Chinese mega-publisher Tencent acquired mobile developer Supercell for $ 8.6 billion in 2016. Supercell is best known for creating the popular mobile game. Clash of the clans and its fallout Clash Royale. The two titles and Clash RoyaleThe vibrant eSports scene in, remains immensely popular to this day. This one-time purchase reigned supreme as the most expensive acquisition in video game history for five long years. The record remained unchallenged until it was usurped on January 10, 2021 by:

1. Take-Two Interactive acquires Zynga: $ 12.7 billion

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games, acquired mobile game developer Zynga for $ 12.7 billion. Zynga has been around for many years, finding early success with social games on Facebook like Farm Town. It would be more successful after the switch to mobile platforms, with games like Words with friends, CSR Racing, and Draw something. He spun the With friends vertical in one of its most popular brands. Boggle with friends, chess with friends, hang out with friends, and Corresponding to With friends all appear in the same series. In 2012, it struck a deal with Hasbro to create board game versions of its most popular mobile titles. Take-Two clearly enjoys Zynga’s game library, and we’re watching with interest to see exactly how it will leverage its massive new mobile powerhouse.

So, have you spotted the trend? That’s right: four of the five most expensive acquisitions in video game history were from developers and publishers specializing in mobile games. This clearly explains why so many games, even in the AAA space, are embracing mobile monetization models. Mobile games have long tails, keep players captive, and remain popular long after release – design facets that have found their way into more traditional blockbuster games. This influence has had a disproportionate effect on the industry, with even the biggest AAA titles now adopting aggressive monetization practices similar to those seen in the mobile space. Who better to help design these changes than the teams and studios that know the most? Cynical? May be. Bad for gamers? Questionable. Smart business? Absoutely.

New South Park game reveals its developer via a new job posting requiring a candidate to work on a new game set in the world of South Park.

It seems like South Park is one of those IP addresses that can withstand almost anything. The beloved but often controversial series has often been able to comment on current affairs almost as it occurs, with episodes only taking a few weeks to produce. South Park through the pandemic has made several specials and episodes based on COVID-19. Now, South Park seeks to further expand its roster of video games.

Announced last year, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone signed a new funding agreement with ViacomCBS, which, among others, supported the funding of a new South Park video game. South Park has already had nine video games since its debut in the late 1990s, although few have garnered as much attention as South Park: The Stick of Truth, and its sequel, South Park: the fractured but whole. The Rod of Truth was released in 2014, and was developed by RPG veterans Obsidian Entertainment, creators of The outer worlds and Fallout: New Vegas.

Obsidian has since abandoned the development process for the following South Park games, and although it was previously reported that the new game will be developed “in-house” by South Park Digital Studios, a new job posting has revealed the studio that will work alongside South Park Digital. The developer of the new South Park game will likely be Question Games, a relatively small studio previously known to the imagination and wit The magic circle.

This news comes from a job posting posted on Question Games’ official Twitter, which reveals that the developer is looking for a Lead Level Designer to “work on a new video game set in the world of South Park”, which makes very likely that the studio is working on the game which turned out to be in the works last year. While Question Games may not have a long established track record of producing games, the studio is made up of people who have worked on Dishonored, BioShock, and the two previous ones South Park games, which makes the team seem at least qualified for the job.

While details are extremely scarce on the new South Park game, hidden in the job list at Question are some interesting details, such as the need to have shipped a multiplayer game as a requirement for the position. This has led many fans to speculate that the new South Park title will make the jump to multiplayer, although only time will tell if that rings true.

A new South Park the game is known to be in development.

Sleep tracking and increase the speed of battery charging

Users can enjoy a shorter charge time and extended battery life to maximize their day and night. Track your sleep history, monitor your rest state, and set sleep goals in the Sleep tile throughout the night, then quickly charge the smartwatch before your day begins.

Sarnia-born and raised video game developer celebrates the release of his company’s first game to market.

Maple Powered Games President Kerry Vandenberg said Monster Harvest was developed with a core team of four and a few outside contractors.

“It took us over two years to create the title, but it has always been a dream of mine and I think everyone on the team is producing a video game and now it’s become a reality and we are just thrilled, ”Vandenberg said.

He said the team is operating remotely at the moment.

“We had an office set up before, but when the coronavirus hit we changed to being totally distant and it ended up working better for us. As you can imagine, we work on computers all day anyway, so we ended up sticking to this format.

Vandenberg, 31, graduated from Gregory Hogan High School and (former) St. Christopher High School in Sarnia and said he left town for a few years but was happy to be back home.

“I didn’t expect I could build something so complex in Sarnia, but it turns out that I think Canada has one of the most successful video game industries in the world and there were a lot of people who had the same dream as mine. “

Monster Harvest is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch and has been translated into ten different languages.

“We are now working to bring it to PlayStation 5 and a few more systems in the future. The game is an RPG (role-playing) hybrid collecting and cultivating monsters, so it takes inspiration from some of the classic games that I grew up, such as Harvest Moon and Pokémon.

Vandenberg said the game is “text heavy,” so he recommends it for anyone over the age of seven.

“Basically a lot of the game revolves around your player running a farm. But, instead of fertilizer, we have a magical substance called slime which allows you to mutate your plants into ‘planimals’ which you can use to fight various monsters and get better in-game items. “

Vandenberg said sales are going so well that they are currently working on a content update to double the number of hours played.

“I work on the game with my wife, she is my best employee,” he said. “We founded the business together and it’s wonderful to work with your partner on a daily basis. So I would recommend anyone to pursue a career in video game production and if you are in Sarnia don’t let that limit you. It can be done, it just takes a lot of planning and a lot of hard work, but it’s work that you will enjoy.
